Sweden's flag to fly at NATO headquarters

Sweden's flag will be raised at NATO's headquarters in Brussels on March 11th, ceremonially marking the country's accession to the alliance.

Sweden's exact time of entry will depend on Hungary's progress in registering its confirmation of Sweden's bid in Washington.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom of Sweden are currently en route to Washington. The official documentation for Sweden's accession will be deposited at the U.S. State Department, signaling the end of the process.

Sweden crossed the final hurdle to become the 32nd NATO ally last week, following Hungary's parliamentary vote to approve the bid. The newly inaugurated president, Tamas Sulyok, signed it into law immediately after taking office.

It took time for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to approve Sweden's NATO bid due to negotiations over Sweden's "alleged outlook" to Hungarian democracy.

Türkiye also raised concerns about Sweden's accession, citing issues related to its treatment of the Kurdish minority within its borders. Turkish Parliament ratified Sweden's accession on January.
