UNICEF warns of surge in child medical needs in Gaza

More than 100 people were killed and dozens injured in Israeli attacks on Palestinians collecting humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip in the last week, the government media office said on Wednesday.

Amid escalating violence and dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, James Elder, spokesperson for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), emphasized the urgent need for medical attention among children in the region.

During a visit to the besieged territory's largest health care complex, Nasir Hospital, Elder took to social media platform X to share insights from his observation.

"Of the 36 hospitals in Gaza, only 12 are partially operational. Nasir Hospital is not one of them. There is a record number of children in need of medical care in Gaza," he stated.

Recalling his previous visits, Elder noted Nasir Hospital's role as a refuge for thousands of people, yet lamented the eerie silence of death that now fills its corridors due to extensive bombardment.

Israeli attacks kill 100 Gazans waiting for aid in a week, media office says

The Gaza Strip, already grappling with chronic shortages of medical supplies and infrastructure, faces intensified challenges amid ongoing Israeli attacks.

On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes targeted a group of individuals facilitating aid transportation at the Kuwait Roundabout in Gaza City, resulting in at least 23 fatalities.

Israeli forces killed Brig. Gen. Fayeq al-Mabhouh, head of police operations in Gaza, during a raid on Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City on Monday. Al-Mabhouh played a crucial role in coordinating the entry of humanitarian aid into the northern Gaza Strip, according to the government media office.

In response to these developments, the government media office accused the Israeli occupation of perpetuating starvation policies and deepening famine in Gaza, despite international warnings. It condemned the attacks as efforts to sow chaos and insecurity within the blockaded enclave.
