The UN Secretary-General is known for his deep respect for Muslim traditions as he had shared his experiences of fasting during last year's Ramadan, shedding light on the profound impact it had on his understanding of Islam and humanitarian solidarity.
His past visits to refugee camps where he fasted alongside displaced individuals last year, Guterres had described Ramadan as a transformative experience that revealed "the true face of Islam." His sentiments were expressed during an interview with UN News's Arabic service, where he emphasized the significance of his annual tradition of visiting a Muslim-majority country during Ramadan.
Guterres, fasting in solidarity with the Palestinians, voiced concern over their struggle to find sustenance for breaking their fast during Ramadan amidst ongoing attacks by Israel and barriers to humanitarian aid deliveries.
As trucks waited to enter Gaza at the Rafah Border Crossing, Guterres underscored the tragic and morally distressing situation on both sides of the border, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire, unhindered access to humanitarian supplies across Gaza, and the release of detainees.
In a poignant gesture of support, Guterres reassured Gazans, stating, "You are not alone," while acknowledging the global outrage felt by people witnessing the daily horrors faced by the residents of Gaza.
