Romanian PM voices support for unification with Moldova

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu issued a statement on Friday expressing support for a potential union between Romania and Moldova.

Highlighting the presence of Romanian nationals in Moldova, Ciolacu remarked, "There are Romanians residing in Moldova akin to myself. History perpetrated an injustice. We are unable to alter the past, but the future lies within our grasp."

"I uphold the concept of merging with Moldova; we harbor no reservations. This will happen either within the EU or we will devise an alternative route," Ciolacu said.

Moldova's government aspires for closer ties with Romania, but the nation also faces internal challenges from pro-Russian separatists in Transnistria. There are concerns that Transnistria could be Russia's next target following Ukraine.

Moldova emphasized that joining Romania would mean becoming a member of NATO. This is seen as a way to deter a possible Russian invasion, given NATO's collective defense principle.
