Polish authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of a Polish citizen accused of espionage on behalf of Russia's military intelligence. The individual allegedly conspired in a plot targeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
As per the statement issued by the Polish National Prosecutor's Office, Pawel K. was apprehended in Poland on suspicion of preparing to transfer airport security information to Russian agents.
The suspect aimed to provide detailed information about Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport, a critical entry point for humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine near the southeastern Polish border. This information was likely intended for the Russians involved in the Ukrainian conflict.
According to the statement, if convicted, the man could potentially spend up to eight years in prison.
Prosecutors stated that the arrest was made possible through strong collaboration with Ukrainian prosecutors and security agencies, who provided crucial evidence and alerted Polish authorities. Officials in Poland noted that the investigation is ongoing.
Poland, a member of the European Union, has shown unwavering solidarity with neighboring Ukraine as it has resisted Russian aggression for over two years.
