Violence in Sudan places 800,000 people in immediate and extreme danger, top U.N. officials inform Security Council

800,000 more Sudanese face death due to civil war, UN warns

Hundreds of thousands of Sudanese are at risk of starvation and death as result of the civil war.

The Sudanese Army (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) initiated a civil war in the country last year, which has resulted in the most significant displacement crisis on a global scale.

The U.N. Political Affairs Chief Rosemary DiCarlo informed the U.N. Security Council that fighting will intensify in El Fasher, the capital of Darfur state, between SAF-aligned members of the Joint Protection Forces and the RSF.

On Monday, warning the U.N. Secretary-General Guterres about the matter, DiCarlo said: "Fighting in El Fasher could unleash bloody intercommunal strife throughout Darfur."

According to the U.N., 25 million Sudanese require assistance, and 8 million have been forced to flee their homes.

According to Edem Wosornu, director of U.N. Aid Operations, 800,000 city residents will be compelled to leave their homes as the conflict shifts to El Fasher, potentially triggering tensions in nearby cities.
Experts claim that immediate action is required to prevent a catastrophic hunger crisis in Sudan, complete collapse of livelihoods, and widespread death.
