Italian FM meets Qatari, Saudi counterparts to discuss Gaza
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed the G-7's commitment to fostering peace and stability in the region during discussions with his Qatari and Saudi counterparts
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held meetings on Monday with his Qatari and Saudi counterparts to discuss the situation in the Middle East on the sidelines of the high-level forum between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the European Unionon Regional Security and Cooperation in Luxembourg.
Regarding his meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Tajani underscored the importance of the partnership between their two countries, pointing out Saudi Arabia's role in deescalation efforts in the Middle East.
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip was among the issues discussed during the talks.
Prince Faisal also met with Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg to review relations between Saudi Arabia and Austria and ways to enhance them to serve the interests of the two countries. They exchanged views on several regional and international issues and the efforts being made in this regard.
Tajani reaffirmed the G-7's commitment to peace and stability in the region, meeting with Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Luxembourg.
He also discussed bringing more humanitarian aid into Gaza through "Food for Gaza," an initiative that aims to facilitate the delivery of food aid, alleviate the suffering of the population, and ensure food security in the Gaza Strip.
Over 34K Palestinians killed, nearly 77K injured
Israel has said it is preparing an offensive against the city of Rafah, where some 1.2 million Palestinians are taking shelter after fleeing the conflict in other parts of the enclave.
The recent reported Israeli attack on the Iranian province of Isfahan, following Iran’s direct attack on Israel, has only clouded hopes of a peace breakthrough in Gaza.
Flouting an International Court of Justice pro
visional ruling, Israel continues its onslaught on the Gaza Strip, where over 34,000 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and nearly 77,000 injured since Oct. 7, according to Palestinian health authorities.
Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Hamas which killed 1,139 people with dozens of captives held in Gaza.
The Israeli war on Gaza has pushed 85% of the territory's population into internal displacement amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60% of the enclave's infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, according to the U.N.
Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice. An interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
