Spanish PM reaffirms support for Palestinian statehood

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday reaffirmed his country's commitment to recognizing Palestine as an independent state in separate telephone conversations with the Palestinian and Egyptian presidents and the king of Jordan.

Sanchez discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East with Mahmoud Abbas, Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and King Abdullah II, according to official sources.

The official decision to recognize Palestine as a state could come soon, the sources said.

Spain, Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia have previously expressed their readiness to recognize a Palestinian state. Sanchez has recently visited Norway, Ireland, and Slovenia to advocate for the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign nation.
