Jamaica recognizes Palestinian State, joining the global 140 countries

Jamaica formally recognized the State of Palestine on Tuesday, following cabinet votin a day earlier.

In a press statement, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith expressed Jamaica's continued support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By recognizing Palestine, Jamaica seeks to reinforce its commitment to efforts for a peaceful settlement while protecting Israel's security and the rights of Palestinians", he added.

Johnson Smith emphasized that Jamaica's decision is consistent with the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, which promote mutual respect among nations and the right of peoples to self-determination.

Jamaica also reaffirmed its support for a ceasefire, the release of hostages and access to humanitarian assistance for the people of Gaza. The country urges all parties to seek diplomatic solutions to achieve lasting peace, bearing in mind the grave consequences of continued fighting.

141 countries recognize the State of Palestine

Jamaica joins the ranks of countries that have recently recognized the State of Palestine, becoming the 141st country to do so and the 12th member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This is in line with Barbados' announcement on April 20, which marked another Caribbean country's formal recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state.
