Germany calls on Europe: We must do more for Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Wednesday Europe must step up help for Ukraine – but stuck to his refusal to send long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv.

This week, with the long-delayed $61 billion military aid package finally approved by U.S. Congress, Ukraine's case has been further bolstered. Scholz described this as an "encouraging and necessary signal."

"But I also want to say clearly that the United States' decision doesn't release us here in Europe from the task of further expanding our support for Ukraine so that the country can defend itself against the aggressor," he said.

Scholz, who recently pledged to supply Ukraine with a third Patriot missile battery, once again called on other European countries with the system to consider allocating a battery. However, when asked whether Germany would reconsider its refusal to send long-range missiles to Taurus, which has often been criticized, Scholz extensively listed the military equipment provided by Germany. "My decision regarding the mentioned weapon system will not change," he added.
