King Charles III to resume public duties after cancer treatment

Buckingham Palace announced Friday that King Charles III, aged 75, will gradually resume some public duties next week after a three-month hiatus for cancer treatment and recuperation.

The monarch's undisclosed cancer diagnosis prompted the break, during which he focused on his health.

The palace said Charles will mark the milestone by visiting a cancer treatment center on Tuesday, the first of several public appearances he will make in the coming weeks.

One of his first significant engagements will be to host a state visit by Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako in June. 

The palace said the king’s doctors are “very encouraged” by his progress, though it is too early to tell how long his treatment will last. It didn’t provide details about what type of treatment he is receiving.

The palace said Charles will continue to perform all of his state duties, including reviewing government documents and meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as he has since his diagnosis was disclosed on Feb. 5.

“As the first anniversary of the coronation approaches, their majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year,’’ the palace said in a statement.

'Cancer was in early stages,' says Prime Minister Rishi Sunak

After a four-day hospitalization for prostate enlargement treatment, King Charles was discharged on Jan. 29. Buckingham Palace disclosed in February that, during routine medical examinations, a concerning condition was detected, leading to the diagnosis of cancer.

While confirming that Charles did not have prostate cancer, specific details regarding the type or stage of cancer were not disclosed. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that the cancer was in its early stages.

The king has temporarily halted his public engagements in light of his treatment.
