EU could be plunged into civil conflict, warns Spanish Minister

Spanish Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge Teresa Ribera warned that Europe can plunge into civil conflict given the far-right activism, preceding the upcoming European Parliamentary elections in June.

'European project could unsuccessful'

In a statement to The Guardian, Ribera said: “When people ask themselves what scapegoats they can use for their problems, instead of properly identifying and addressing the causes of their problems, the search for scapegoats accelerates. This disrupts coexistence in a society. "

"I think this is the most risky point we are facing now, the risk of the collapse of a European project that is probably one of the most successful projects in history and certainly in recent European history,” the Spanish Minister went on to add.

Ribera said that Europe, which is already fighting “traditional, violent, extremely bloody and painful wars in Ukraine and Gaza," is also facing threats from those who use energy, food, disinformation and social media manipulation as tools of modern warfare.

'No compromise with the far right'

He added that at a time of global turmoil and uncertainty, center-right politicians should resist the urge to imitate or ally with the far right.

“I think it turned out to be a big mistake, and historically it always has been, to think that seeking common ground with the far right is a way to pacify the far right,” Ribera said in a statement. “

"That never works. The French know this very well; I think the republican principle of guarding the cordon against what is not tolerated is still the best answer,” she added.
