Shamkhani, Iran's top security official, dismissed

Ali Shamkhani, the top security official in Iran, handed over his post as Secretary General of the Supreme National Security Council, which he had held for 10 years. General Ali Akbar Ahmadiyan, a senior member of the Revolutionary Guards, was appointed by presidential decree to replace the dismissed Shamkhani.

10 YEARS OF SERVICE TERMINATED

The 62-year-old Ahmadiyan, who previously served as the Commander of the Revolutionary Guards Naval Forces for 3 years, was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Guards in 2000 and held this position for 7 years.

Ali Shamkhani served as Defense Minister for two terms between 1997 and 2005, and in 2013 he was appointed Secretary General of the Supreme National Security Council, which shapes Iran's security and foreign policy.

Shamkhani also spearheaded the normalization talks between Iran and Saudi Arabia in March under the mediation of China.

HIS ADVISOR WAS EXECUTED FOR ESPIONAGE

Ali Reza Akbari, who served as Shamkhani's deputy minister when he was defense minister and later as his advisor to the Supreme Council Secretary General, was executed in January for "spying" for the UK.

Shamkhani had played a role in the trial process by ensuring the return of Akbari, who also has British citizenship, to the country after suspicions of espionage were raised against him.

On the other hand, the head of the Intelligence Organization, Hossein Taeb, was dismissed in June 2022 following the Israeli-linked attacks in Iran.
