'Security corridor' shields Türkiye from terrorism, says Erdogan
President Erdogan vows to fortify the southern borders, thwart terrorism's spread, and distance Türkiye from terrorist groups and their alleged supporters
By establishing a "security corridor" along its southern borders, Türkiye is effectively shielding itself from the spread of terrorism and violence, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday in a rally in southeast Sirnak province.
Ahead of the upcoming local elections on March 31, Erdogan emphasized the country's efforts to prevent the escalation of conflict.
"We are completely preventing the spread of the surrounding fire to Türkiye by establishing a security corridor along our southern borders," Erdogan added.
He highlighted Türkiye's measures to create barriers between itself and terrorist groups aiming to draw it into conflicts, while also asserting the country's stance of distancing from what he referred to as "imperialists and their puppets."
This reference is presumably directed at the PKK and YPG/PKK terrorist groups, along with the countries Türkiye accuses of supporting them along its borders with Iraq and Syria.
"The separatist terrorist organization has been forced upon our nation as a tool to perpetuate the oppression aimed at establishing single-party fascism in our lands," Erdogan added.
The PKK, recognized as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S. and the European Union, has waged a terror campaign for over 35 years. The group has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 individuals, including women, children and infants.
Its Syrian branch, the YPG, is also mentioned in the context.
