The member countries of the D-8 Economic Cooperation Organization issued a joint statement for the Kahramanmaras-centered earthquakes that occurred on February 6. "We have expanded our cooperation in these difficult times. We are confident that after witnessing the solidarity of the Turkish people, Türkiye will successfully transition into the phase of recovery and reconstruction," the statement said. In the declaration, it was also noted that studies on the establishment of a joint disaster relief and assistance mechanism have been initiated.

D-8 member countries, including Türkiye, Nigeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Bangladesh, expressed their condolences for those who lost their lives in the earthquakes and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

SOLIDARITY ASSESSMENT

In the joint statement, "We have expanded our cooperation in these difficult times. After witnessing the solidarity of the Turkish people, we are confident that Türkiye will successfully enter the phase of recovery and reconstruction." The solidarity of the D-8 member states to Türkiye's disaster relief efforts was emphasized.

ESTABLISHING A DISASTER FIGHTING AND AID MECHANISM BETWEEN 8 COUNTRIES

"We are also confident that the aid provided will contribute to emergency response and reconstruction in the affected areas." In the declaration called, it was noted that considering the natural disasters in the majority of the D-8 member states, it was accepted to work on the establishment of the D-8 disaster fighting and aid mechanism.

The statement was published in order to show solidarity with the Turkish government and people at the 46th D-8 Commission Meeting held in Istanbul on February 15-16.

WHAT IS THE D-8 ECONOMIC COOPERATION ORGANIZATION?

Former Prime Minister, the late Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan the leadership, the Developing 8 Countries (D-8) Economic Cooperation Organization, which was established in 1997 with the aim of "increasing the welfare and peace of member nations", has been maintaining its existence strongly for 25 years with a population of approximately 1.2 billion.

D-8, which was announced 25 years ago to bring together developing Muslim countries in foreign policy, includes Türkiye, Nigeria, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia and Bangladesh.

The D-8 countries currently cover a geography exceeding 7.5 million square meters with a population of approximately 1.2 billion and an economy approaching 4 trillion dollars.
