Greek tourist's provocative gesture in Türkiye’s Hagia Sophia Mosque sparks controversy

A Greek tourist visiting Türkiye has sparked controversy after he posted a photo of himself unfurling a Greek flag inside Istanbul's famous Hagia Sophia Mosque, accompanied by a caption claiming the historic city as "forever Greek."

The incident took place in the museum section of the Hagia Sophia, a landmark that has served both as a cathedral and a mosque over its storied past.

The photo, shared on social media with the note "Dear city, forever Greek," immediately drew backlash from numerous social media users, prompting calls for action from authorities.

The social media users urged for a reality check for Greeks harboring such sentiments about the city.

The provocative gesture and the controversial remark have fueled a heated discussion on the internet, with users censuring the post with comments like 'someone needs to tell the Greeks the truth.' Some furious users also called the post 'nonsense,' saying that 'Greeks live in dreams.'
