Türkiye's Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that a total of 594,000 personnel have been assigned for election security in the upcoming local administration general elections on March 31. This includes 324,000 from the General Directorate of Security, 197,000 from the Gendarmerie General Command, 2,850 from the Coast Guard Command, 53,000 security guards, and 17,000 voluntary security guards.

Speaking at the Election Security Meeting held at the Interior Ministry office, Minister Yerlikaya emphasized their meticulous efforts to ensure that the local elections proceed in an atmosphere of peace and security, allowing the full expression of the public's will at the ballot box.

Yerlikaya highlighted the comprehensive coordination with the ministry, the Supreme Election Board (YSK), provincial and district election boards, and all relevant institutions. He mentioned that on Dec. 12, 2023, they issued a circular regarding election precautions to all 81 provincial governorships.

The circular outlined specific measures to be taken, including ensuring the elections are conducted in peace and security, avoiding any disruptions, meticulous monitoring of election board decisions, and acting in accordance with these decisions.

Confidence in preparedness of security forces

"We have established the Election Coordination Commission, chaired by our Deputy Minister, to ensure coordination and cooperation among all agencies involved in the election process, nationwide review of election-related measures, real-time sharing of election-related incidents, and the development of preventive measures," Yerlikaya said.

He also mentioned that they have organized Election Security Meetings with the participation of provincial governors, provincial gendarmerie commanders, provincial police chiefs, and other relevant unit commanders. During these meetings, risk analyses were conducted, and provincial election security plans were developed accordingly.

Highlighting the significance of the upcoming local elections, Yerlikaya emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of the electoral process. He noted that all necessary precautions are being taken to safeguard democracy and uphold the rule of law.

"In addition to our ongoing efforts, we have held meetings with provincial governors and evaluated officials from the YSK. To determine the necessary measures, we have also held cybersecurity meetings with representatives from the Ministry of National Intelligence, the General Directorate of Provincial Administration, the Gendarmerie General Command, and the General Directorate of Security," Yerlikaya added.

He concluded by expressing confidence in the preparedness of the security forces and their dedication to maintaining the peace and security of the electoral process.
