Parliament Commission to investigate mining accident in Erzincan-Ilic

Turkish Parliament's Ilic Mining Accident Investigation Commission Chairman Atay Uslu announced they will inspect the site of the landslide on May 7-8, followed by visits to other gold mines.

The commission, formed to thoroughly investigate the incident in Erzincan's Ilic district, has held extensive meetings with ministry officials, accumulating over 800 pages of minutes.

Uslu highlighted their upcoming visits to the accident site and discussions with local authorities. They plan to meet with miners and engage with experts from universities, government agencies, and industry bodies to ensure a comprehensive understanding.

The commission aims to produce a report recommending measures for safe mining practices, including environmental protection and workplace safety.

Uslu stressed the importance of their work in establishing a new legal framework for mining safety. The report will encompass findings from the accident and propose guidelines for a secure mining policy, prioritizing human welfare and environmental preservation.

What happened?

Nine miners were trapped under the rubble on Feb.13 at the Copler Gold Mine operated by Anagold Mining in Erzincan-Ilic due to the collapse of cyanide-laden soil. Miners' bodies could not be reached even after 30 days following the incident.

Erzincan Public Prosecutor's Office detained eight people regarding the incident.

A parliamentary commission to investigate the issue was established.
