UNICEF: 7.1 million children affected by earthquake

The United Nations (UN) discussed the earthquakes in Kahramanmaras. Speaking at the meeting, UNICEF Spokesperson James Elder said, "The total number of children living in 10 cities hit by two earthquakes was 4.6 million. In Syria, 2.5 million children were affected by earthquakes."

A weekly press conference was held at the United Nations (UN) Geneva Office, moderated by Spokesperson Alessandra Vellucci.

'EARTHQUAKE AFFECTED ALL PEOPLE'

World Food Program (WFP) Spokesperson Kenn Crossley said that there is a triangle between Aleppo, Hama and Latakia that was severely affected by the earthquake. "Not just one group, but all people were affected by the earthquake." said. Mentioning that they have collaborated extensively with their partners to heal wounds, including in northwest Syria, Crossley noted that WFP began working with its partners to serve hot meals in volunteer shelters a few hours after the earthquake.

'5.5 MILLION PEOPLE IN SYRIA NEEDED FOOD BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE'

"Food aid was provided to approximately 180 thousand people in northwest Syria," Crossley said. Crossley stated that before the earthquake, there were 5.5 million people in need of food aid in Syria, and this number increased even more after the earthquake.

'WE SEND AID TRAILER TO SYRIA'

International Organization for Migration (IOM) Spokesperson Paul Dillon stated that 11 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid belonging to IOM set off from IOM's warehouse in Gaziantep to the newly opened Babüsselame Border Gate, to go to the northwest of Syria today. Dillon noted that 4 additional trucks went to the northwest of Syria via the Babülhava Border Gate and said, "Since Monday night last week, IOM has delivered 30 truckloads of aid to Idlib."

'WE HAVE FEAR THAT THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN DIE'

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Spokesperson James Elder stated that they fear that thousands of children may have died in Türkiye and Syria due to earthquakes. Elder said, "The number of children living in 10 provinces hit by two earthquakes in Türkiye was 4.6 million in total. In Syria, 2.5 million children were affected by earthquakes," said Elder, adding that children and their families needed additional support.
