The gunman who killed three people in Rotterdam, Netherlands, shot a woman and her daughter in their home, then entered a classroom at Rotterdam Erasmus University hospital and opened fire at a male teacher.
It was stated that the 32 year old murderer, a student at the Erasmus University, killed the mother, daughter and teacher in the armed attack he carried out. After killing the woman and her daughter, the man set his house on fire, then went to the Rotterdam Medical Centre university hospital, entered a classroom, shot and killed a 43 year old teacher. Near the hospital, where he was arrested and set fire to the building. It is not known why the killer carried out the attack.
Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb, Rotterdam police Chief Fred Westerbeke, and the city's chief public prosecutor addressed a news conference to share details about the shootings.Westerbeke informed at a press conference that the 32 year old suspect carried out two armed attacks alone.
Westerbeke said that the suspect carried out the first attack in the Heiman Dullaertplein area where he lived, and the second attack at the Erasmus University Hospital, 1.5 kilometres away from the first.
"We were shocked by the terrible attack. Fire was opened at two different points in the city, in front of many people," Rotterdam mayor said.
"Emotions are very high in the city," said Aboutaleb, adding that the necessary support will be given to those in need.
"My thoughts go out to the victims of the violence, their loved ones and to all the people who have been in great fear," Prime Minister Mark Rutte also shared his great sadness due to the attack, saying on X (Twiiter).
Stating that the attacker threw a Molotov cocktail and started a fire in the hospital, Westerbeke stated that the suspect was caught with his weapon and that he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Stating that it is assessed that the attacks were carried out by a single person and the intentions of the attacker are being investigated, the police pointed out that the suspect had a criminal record for animal abuse in 2021.
