Chancellor Scholz supports continuation of EU-Türkiye migration deal

German Prime Minister Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke about the migration agreement between the European Union(EU) and Türkiye.

"The migration agreement with Türkiye should continue," Prime Minister Scholz stating that the agreement is beneficial.

"I believe that the agreement with Türkiye has been very useful in recent years and it is therefore right that the (EU) President and the Migration Commission are now negotiating the continuation of the agreement with Türkiye. So that we can continue to use it as a basis for our relations," Scholz said at a press conference in Granada, Spain.

Chancellor Scholz emphasized that it is always necessary to conclude special agreements for further cooperation with transit countries.

"Türkiye is one of the countries where this works well directly and should therefore be continued, if the European Union is to expand, then it must also have the capacity to expand and it is therefore right that we have started to discuss how this can be achieved," Scholz noted.

'AMMUNITION SUPPORT TO UKRAINE'

Scholz, upon being asked whether Taurus missiles would be provided to Ukraine, stated that Germany has supported Ukraine in a very comprehensive way.

"We have provided this support with tanks and ammunition, with artillery, in this context with long-range artillery, which we procured very early with the US and the UK. We have ensured the resumption of long-stopped ammunition production so that we can provide continuous support to Ukraine. We always evaluate all decisions in detail, and one point for us is that it is not possible for us to involve German soldiers in any activity outside the territory of Ukraine." Scholz noted.

'MIGRANT TRAGEDIES OFF THE COAST OF ITALY'

"We will always have to choose carefully whether certain tasks can be expanded, whether it makes sense, and we have to ensure that the Mediterranean is not filled with more dead people and that smugglers are not successful in this regard," Scholz said regarding the German government's financial aid to German migrant rescue organizations off the coast of Italy.
