Candidates emerge for extraordinary congress as Good Party's Aksener steps down

The landscape for the upcoming extraordinary congress of the Good Party began to take shape as party leader Meral Aksener announced she would not be running for re-election.

As the party prepares for the congress on April 27, several names have officially declared their candidacy.

Musavat Dervisoglu and Mehmet Tolga Akalin officially announced their candidacy. While Koray Aydin's candidacy is expected to be declared, Bilge Yilmaz is also among the potential candidates

In an announcement during the party's congress, Aksener stated:

"I personally accept the price we have paid in the context of election results. If Good Party's name is not associated with dirty deals that endanger tomorrow in order to win today, I accept this price. If Good Party has resisted being a backyard for either the government, the main opposition, or some actors chasing 2028 schemes, I accept this price. And even if Good Party, in order not to sacrifice today, has managed to take a stance that will show its usual upright posture against various calamities that may come before Türkiye in the future, I accept this price. Because, just like yesterday, today I am willing to pay any price for the good of my people, my state, and my country."

As the congress date was set for April 27, the lineup of candidates for the party leadership began to emerge.

The race is expected to include TBMM Group Deputy Chairman Koray Aydın, TBMM Group Vice Chairperson Musavat Dervisoglu, IYI Party Head of Migration Policies Mehmet Tolga Akalin, and Bilge Yilmaz, who resigned from her position as the Head of Economic Policies, calling for Aksener's resignation.

What happened?

In the local elections on March 31, the Good Party ran independently and received 3.77% of the vote, winning only one municipality.

Party leader Aksener held a press conference to evaluate the results of the local elections and announced that the party would hold an extraordinary congress.

Several figures, including Bilge Yilmaz, the Deputy Chairperson in charge of Economic Policies and Bugra Kavuncu, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor candidate, resigned from their positions.

Some party members called for General Chairperson Aksener to resign.
