Ghebreyesus made evaluations at the press conference held at WHO Headquarters.
Expressing his condolences to those who lost their lives due to earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria, Ghebreyesus said that approximately 8 thousand people lost their lives due to earthquakes, thousands were injured and the numbers are expected to increase.
"We are racing against time to save lives, with weather conditions and ongoing aftershocks. People need shelter, food, clean water, medical care and other health care services. WHO has 3 million dollars from the Emergency Fund for the fight in both countries," said Ghebreyesus.
He stated that WHO provided medical equipment support to both countries and helped with special medical care.
Ghebreyesus noted that one plane carrying medical supplies and surgical trauma kits from WHO's logistics center in Dubai departed for Istanbul and the other for Damascus, and stated that they are planning to send a third plane.
Stating that a high-level team was sent to coordinate the WHO's interventions in the field, Ghebreyesus said, "In addition, 77 national and 13 international emergency medical teams are on duty in both countries."
