Carlo Doglioni, President of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), spoke to Italian broadcast Corriere della Sera, regarding the earthquake in Türkiye. Doglioni gave important information about the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Kahramanmaras.
Earthquake expert Doglioni said, "Tonight, the Arabian fault line seems to have moved 3 meters from the Anatolian fault line on a northeast-southwest axis." The expert warned that this movement could be more than 3 meters. Doglioni emphasized the size of the earthquake, saying, "This is a very big movement."
Continuing his statement, Italian earthquake expert Carlo Doglioni gave information about the region: "This is a very active area and one of the most dangerous areas in the Mediterranean. In the past centuries, very severe earthquakes have occurred here. Türkiye seems to have moved over the Arabian plate."
FAULT LINE MOVED 3 METERS
Carlo Doglioni, "How much could the plate have moved?" On the question, "The fault became active for at least 150 kilometers, even with a displacement of more than 3 meters. Everything happened in a few tens of seconds, and this is a 7.8-7.9 magnitude earthquake."
In his speech Doglioni said, "It's a really big earthquake. Its epicenter was in the south-central region of Türkiye, just north of the Syrian border."
"What kind of move was it?" He replied, "We are talking about a diagonal movement, the fault plane is very inclined and we observe a horizontal displacement on both sides of the fault during the event."
Doglioni said, "We are talking about a very seismic region, which is one of the most dangerous areas of the Mediterranean. There have been extremely severe earthquakes in the past centuries."
