UN Court set to deliver stern decision against Israel over ongoing Gaza attacks
The International Court of Justice likely to issue a critical ruling against Israel following South Africa's petition for additional measures amid concerns about starvation in Gaza
Israel anticipates a stern decision from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), currently addressing a petition filed by South Africa seeking additional provisional measures against Tel Aviv for its ongoing assaults on the Gaza Strip.
The ICJ judges are presently deliberating a South African case, requesting further sanctions against Israel for its campaign on Gaza, as reported by Israeli public broadcaster KAN on Tuesday.
In early March, South Africa urged the top U.N. court to mandate emergency measures against Israel in response to its extensive attacks on Gaza, citing the risk of starvation among Palestinians in the besieged enclave.
The request included a call for all parties to cease hostilities and release hostages and detainees.
Multiple international and U.N. agencies have warned of an escalating famine risk in Gaza, with the Israeli army hindering humanitarian aid entry, particularly in the northern regions of the enclave.
The World Court is expected to rule on the requested additional measures soon, likely incorporating criticism of Israel and requesting additional monitoring reports, according to the KAN report.
However, Israeli observers speculate that no further directives, such as a cessation of the Gaza conflict, will be issued.
Nonetheless, the court is anticipated to adopt an unprecedented critical stance toward Israel, as noted by the broadcaster.
UNSC passes Gaza cease-fire resolution, Türkiye supports
Based on the lunar calendar's sighting, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution urging an immediate cease-fire in Gaza from March 11 to April 9 during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The passage of such a resolution has been months in the making. Several resolutions have failed due to vetoes by the U.N.’s permanent members, notably the U.S. and Russia.
Türkiye warmly welcomed the U.N. Security Council's decision, expressing appreciation for the resolution's emphasis on humanitarian access to Gaza during Ramadan. Once Keceli, the Turkish Ministry's spokesperson, remarked that Türkiye views this resolution as a positive step toward alleviating the crisis in Gaza.
“We consider the U.N. Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in Gaza for the month of Ramadan and humanitarian access to Gaza to be a positive step,” said Keceli.
He added that Türkiye hopes Israel will promptly adhere to the resolution's stipulations.
“We call on the international community to take a united stand against Israel to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and to find a lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he concluded.
